Heidelberg Stumbles at ONU

Ada, Ohio – January 30, 2010 – The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team suffered a 92-87 setback in overtime at the hands of host Ohio Northern University today in an Ohio Athletic Conference match up. The win extends ONU’s overall record to 10-9 and its OAC mark to 8-4, while the Berg falls to 12-7 and 8-4.

 

In the first half, Ohio Northern led by as many an eight points, but the Berg battled back and pulled within two points at the half, 38-26, following a Matt Grieves (Huron, Ohio /Huron) jumper in the final minute.

 

Heidelberg’s Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Ohio / Harvest Preparatory) opened the second half with a trey to give the Berg the lead which was then extended to five points, 47-42, just under five minutes into the half courtesy of two Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) free throws.

 

A back and forth battle followed that saw the host Polar Bears retake the lead at 71-66 with 2:06 left in regulation. Heidelberg answered with a 5-0 run capped off by a Calver trey with 29 second remaining to force overtime.

 

Ohio Northern opened the extra stanza with a 10-1 run to build another eight point lead, 80-72. Heidelberg did not quit and pulled within two points on two occasions with the latter following another Calver three-pointer with 23 seconds on the clock. ONU would sink 6-of-7 free throws down the stretch to help seal the win.

 

For the game, Heidelberg connected on 51.8 percent (32-of-62) of its shots, while ONU hit a 60.0 percent clip (33-of-55). On the glass, the Polar Bears held a 35-25 advantage.

 

Calver led four in double figures for the Berg with a career-high 26 points. For Calver his day consisted of connecting four times from long range, along with 10-of-12 free throws, to go along with three assists, three steals and two rebounds.

 

Also reaching double figures was Nate Davis (Dayton, Ohio / Stivers) and Givner with 13 points apiece, while Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) had 12. All three hauled in five rebounds apiece and Givner dished out six assists.
