'Berg Wins Invite

Pittsburgh, Pa. – November 29, 2009 - The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team was victorious in the Radisson / Carnegie Mellon Invite Championship as they beat Manhattanville College 89-69. The Berg’s win improves their record to 3-2, while Manhattanville drops to 4-2 on the season.  

 

Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) was named the tournament MVP, while Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Harvest Prepatory) joined Calver on the All-Tournament team.

 

An evenly matched game in the first half ended in a 43-38 lead at halftime, in favor of Heidelberg.

 

In the second half, Heidelberg would maintain its lead throughout the rest of the game, while adding 15 more points.

 

Givner started the run when he collected an offensive rebound and found Calver, who then drilled a three-pointer bringing Heidelberg’s highest lead of the game to 12 points.

 

Leading Heidelberg offensively was Calver who scored a game-high 16 points, including a perfect 6-6 from the line. Givner added 14 points to go along with his game-high six assists. Also contributing was Jim Smalley (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / Midpark) who scored 12 points and racked up three rebounds on the day.

 

On the defensive end, Adrian Casey Jr. (Lorain, Ohio / Lorain Admiral King) led the team with six rebounds on top of his six points.

 

Heidelberg returns to action for its first conference match-up of the year, Wednesday, Dec. 2, when they travel to Otterbein College starting at 7:30 p.m.
