Tiffin, Ohio – December 16, 2009 –The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team won a 68-64 decision over Baldwin-Wallace College. The Berg improves to 6-3 overall, 3-1 in the OAC, while the Yellow Jackets drops to 4-4 overall, 2-2 in conference play.
Baldwin-Wallace would lead 25-17 with seven minutes left in the first half, when Paul Glass scored while being fouled and knocked down the free throw, completing the three-point play.
The Student Princes would battle back and regain the lead when senior Jim Smalley (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / Midpark) scored from a jumper on a fast break, while the Berg took a 26-25 lead.
The Berg would withstand the lead, while both teams would go into halftime with a score of 34-31.
In the second half, both teams battled for the lead resulting in 12 lead changes and five ties.
Down by two points with three minutes left in the game, freshman Kourea Hayes (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Belleville) would drain a three-pointer, while Heidelberg recaptured a 63-62 lead.
With clutch free throw shooting by Smalley, Heidelberg would hold off the Yellow Jackets for a 68-64 victory.
For the game, Heidelberg shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the field, while Baldwin-Wallace shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56).
Smalley led the way for the Berg with 14 points to go along with three assists and a game-high three steals. Backing Smalley was freshman Adrian Casey Jr. (Lorain, Ohio / Lorain Admiral King) racking up 11 points to go along with five rebounds. Senior Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) scored 10 points and dished out a game-high five assists with three rebounds.
Senior Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) knocked down seven points, three rebounds, and two steals, while Hayes, freshman Nate Davis (Dayton, Ohio / Stivers), and senior Matt Grieves (Huron, Ohio / Huron) chipped in with six points each. On the glass, Davis and Grieves tied with Casey with team-high five rebounds each.
Heidelberg finishes its four-game home stand when it hosts Mount UnionCollege, Saturday, December 19, at 3:00 p.m.
