B-W Stings the Berg in Overtime

Berea, Ohio - February 3, 2010 – Baldwin-Wallace College hit a put back lay up as time expired in overtime to give the host Yellow Jackets a 77-75 men’s basketball win over Heidelberg University tonight, February 3. The loss drops the Berg to 12-8 overall and 8-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while B-W improves to 12-8, 7-6.

 

In the first half, Heidelberg hit its first five shots to open on a 10-0 run ending in a Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Harvest Preparatory) jumper at the 16:57 mark. B-W cut its deficit to 10-6 with a lay up at 14:09, but the Berg answered with a 17-9 run and led 27-15 when Zach Golec (Dennison, Ohio / Claymont) connected on a jumper at 8:35. The Yellow Jackets trimmed their deficit to 10, 40-30, at the half.

 

In the second half, it was B-W that got off to the hot start with a 14-4 run ending in a Zane Meeder lay up that tied the score at 44 with 14:15 left in the game. Heidelberg’s John Miller (Millersburg, Ohio / West Holmes) answered on the opposite end with a trey to put the Berg back on top.

 

B-W and Heidelberg would go on to trade the lead on three occasions before the host Yellow Jackets built a five-point advantage, 63-58, with just over five minutes on the clock. Heidelberg tied the game, 66-66 following a Givner jumper with 1:35 left. Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) had a  lay up with 18 seconds remaining to put the Berg on top by two, 68-66, but Baldwin-Wallace’s Chris Ameen connected on his own lay up with 10 seconds remaining to force overtime.

 

In the extra period, the Student Princes scored the first three points and led 71-68 when Kinn connected on a jumper with 3:52 left to play. The Yellow Jackets came back to tie the score at 75 apiece on another Ameen lay up with 54 seconds remaining. After a defensive stop, B-W held for the final shot, which was missed but rebounded and put in by Paul Glass for the win.

 

For the game, Heidelberg connected on 52.4 percent (33-of-63) of its shots compared to a 44.1 clip (30-of-68) by B-W. Heidelberg and Baldwin-Wallace battled to a 38-38 tie on the glass.

 

Leading two in double figures for the Berg was Givner with 13 points, to go along with seven rebounds. Kinn finished with 11 points, while Adrian Casey Jr. (Lorain, Ohio / Admiral King), Miller, Derrick Flynn (Cleveland, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) and Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) had seven points apiece.

 

Casey led the way on the glass with 10 rebounds,

 

Meeder led the way for Baldwin-Wallace with a game-high 17 points and added 10 rebounds for a double-double.
