Pioneers Outlasts the Berg

Marietta, Ohio – February 7, 2010 –The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team drops a tough battle to Marietta College with a score of 77-72. Heidelberg falls to 12-9 overall, 8-6 in OAC on the year, while Marietta moves to 9-12, 5-9 in the conference.
 
Heidelberg came out of the gates strong in the first half taking a 11-2 lead, when senior Jim Smalley (Middelburg Heights, Ohio / Midpark) found senior Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) for a three-pointer.
 
Marietta battled back and tied it 17-17, with 11 minutes left before intermission.
 
Both teams fought hard as they would go into halftime knotted up at 42-42.
 
Constant lead changes would continue in the second half. 

 

The Berg would have a 64-60 lead with seven minutes remaining when senior Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) split a pair of free-throws.

 

With four minutes remaining, the Pioneers would go up 66-64 and would never lose the lead for the rest of game.
 
For Heidelberg, Calver led three in double figures with a career-high 27 points to go along with six rebounds. Calver also shot 4-7 behind the three-point arc. Following Calver was freshman Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Harvest Preparatory) and Kinn with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Givner also racked in five boards.

 

Smalley contributed with eight points, five rebounds, and also dished out a team-high three assists. Freshman Adrian Casey Jr. (Lorain, Ohio / Lorain Admiral King) scored seven points and grabbed four boards.

 

Leading on the glass was freshman Nate Davis (Dayton, Ohio / Stivers) with seven rebounds.

Heidelberg looks to get back in the win column when it hosts Capital University on Wednesday, February 10, at 7:30 p.m.
