Austintown, Ohio – March 10, 2010 – The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team has two representatives on the 2010 Academic Ohio Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Team. Earning a spot on the team is senior Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby), while fellow classmate Jim Smalley (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / Midpark) is an honorable mention honoree.
The faculty athletic representatives of the 10-member OAC schools voted on the selections. To be eligible one must carry at least a 3.25 cumulative grade points average, be a starter or key reserve and be in at least their second year at the institution.
Calver is picking up his second academic honor this season, joining his nod on the ESPN the Magazine Academic District IV First Team. He is an accounting and sports management major that boasts a grade point average of 3.80. In his senior season, Calver led the Berg in scoring with 13.8 points a game, in assists with 85, in made three-pointers with 47 and in free throw shooting percentage (.756). For his efforts on the hardwood, Calver was named to the OAC Second Team.
Smalley is an education major and has a gpa of 3.66. He is picking up his first academic honor of his career. On the court, Smalley led the defense with 52 steals, while ranking third in scoring with 10.3 points per night. He also hauled in 3.3 rebounds a game and had 61 assists.
Heidelberg closed out the year with an overall record of 15-13 and posted a 9-9 mark against OAC foes. The Berg made its 49th appearance, fourth-overall in the OAC Tournament where they played in its seventh OAC Tournament championship game.
