'Berg Falls to the Purple Raiders

Tiffin, Ohio – January 15, 2011 – The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team’s three-game winning streak came to a halt tonight at Seiberling Gymnasium, as it lost to the University of Mount Union with a score of 79-73. ‘Berg drops to 7-8 overall and 5-3 in the OAC, while the Purple Raiders improve to the same mark.

Mount Union came out strong in the first half. It captured a 6-4 lead at the 16:22 mark and it would stay ahead for the duration going into halftime up 36-26.

After intermission, Heidelberg continued to chip at Mount Union’s lead and at the 17:41 mark the Berg would go on a 12-3 run which was topped off by Clifton Powell (Detroit, Mich. / Bishop Foley) scoring on a layup to tie the game at 45.

The Purple Raiders, however, would regain the lead and would not look back.

For the game, Mount Union shot 51.9 percent, while Heidelberg shot 44.6 percent.

Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Harvest Preparatory) led two in double figures for Heidelberg with 18 points, while Darion Capers (Dayton, Ohio / Trotwood-Madison) scored 16. Givner also dished out a game high five assists.

Also making his presence felt was Kyle Tuley (Berea, Ohio / Berea) who registered nine points to go along with a team-high six rebounds. Wes Paramore (Painesville, Ohio / Harvey) added eight points, while Pat Barrett (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) and Victor Fortkamp (Saint Henry, Ohio / Saint Henry) each had five points.

Heidelberg completes its four-game homestand when it hosts John Carroll University, Wednesday (Jan.19) at 7:30 p.m.
