Heidelberg Earns a 'W' on the Road

Wilmington, Ohio – January 22, 2011 – After a two-game hiatus, the Heidelberg University men’s basketball team returns to the win column as it defeated Wilmington College 79-74 today. With the win, the Berg improves to 8-9 overall and 6-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Quakers fall to 7-10 overall and 3-7 against league foes.

The first half included four ties and six lead changes. Heidelberg finished the half strong with a 6-1 run en route to a 35-30 halftime lead.

The Berg maintained the lead and went up by as much as nine points when senior Kyle Tuley (Berea, Ohio / Berea) made a pair of free throws, giving Heidelberg a 57-48 lead early in the second half.

Wilmington would then go on a 10-1 run knotting the game at 58-58 with 9:38 minutes left.

The Quakers had a nice cushion leading 67-61 with 6:05 minutes on the clock; however the Berg would go on a 5-0 run to tie it for the sixth time.

Tied at 70 apiece, Heidelberg continued to battle down in the paint to regain the lead which included layups from freshman Victor Fortkamp (Saint Henry, Ohio / Saint Henry) and sophomore Nate Davis (Dayton, Ohio / Stivers). In the last 30 seconds, Heidelberg showed composure, gong 5-6 at the line with junior Darion Capers (Dayton, Ohio / Trotwood-Madison) making four of them.

Capers led three in double figures with 20 points to go along with a game-high 10 boards to register his first career double-double. Junior Clifton Powell (Detroit, Mich. / Bishop Foley) followed with career-high 14 points, while Quintin Aden Jr. (Canal Winchester, Ohio / Harvest Preparatory) scored 10.

Sophomore Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Harvest Preparatory) contributed with nine points and eight boards, while Davis rejected a game-high four shots and pocketed a team-high three steals.

Heidelberg is back in action as it returns Wednesday (Jan. 26) to host Baldwin-Wallace College at 7:30 p.m.
