'Berg Falls at League-Leader Marietta

Marietta, Ohio – February 12, 2011 – Marietta College outscored Heidelberg University 13-2 in the final 3:30 to post a 73-61 Ohio Athletic Conference men’s basketball victory in Marietta, Ohio. Marietta, ranked 18th in the nation, improved to 21-2 overall and 14-2 against league foes, while the Berg falls to 10-13, 8-8.

The Pioneers win evened its series record with Heidelberg for the year at a game apiece. In December the Berg posted an 81-77 win on its home court which gave Marietta its first loss on the year after opening up at 13-0.

A Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Harvest Preparatory) layup pulled Heidelberg within a point, 60-59, with 3:40 left in the ballgame. However, Marietta found the scoreboard on its next three possessions en route to outscoring Heidelberg 13-2 in the closing minutes of the game for the win.

Heidelberg’s lone basket down the stretch came from Victor Fortkamp (Saint Henry, Ohio / Saint Henry) at the 1:36 mark. The Pioneers connected on 6-of-8 from the charity stripe to help seal the victory.

Leading the way in the scoring column for Heidelberg was Givner with 17 points. Clifton Powell (Detroit, Mich. / Bishop Foley) followed with eight points and a team-leading five rebounds.

Marietta had four players in double figures led by Kevin Knab’s game-high 21 points. Trevor Halter added 13 points and nine rebounds.

For the game, Heidelberg shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the field, while Marietta hit 36.7 percent (22-of-60). On the glass, Marietta held a 44-31 advantage.
