'Berg Tops the Cardinals

Westerville, Ohio – February 16, 2011 – The Heidelberg University men’s basketball pulled out a 65-60 win over Ohio Athletic Conference foe Otterbein University. The win allows the Berg to move up to fourth place with Ohio Northern in the OAC behind Marietta, John Carroll, and Capital. The Student Princes improve to 11-13 overall, and 9-8 in the OAC, while the Cardinals fall to 12-12 and 8-9.

Starting with a lay-up by Victor Fortkamp, Heidelberg took the lead and never looked back. With 9:15 left in the first half, the Berg increased their lead to 13 with two quick baskets by Darion Capers (Dayton, Ohio / Trotwood-Madison) and one by Kyle Tuley (Berea, Ohio / Berea), all assisted by Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Harvest Preparatory). After battling back in forth, the Berg had an 11-point lead going into the locker room.

The Berg did not let half time slow them down, as they increased its lead to 15 five minutes into the game with a three pointer by Wes Paramore (Painesville, Ohio / Harvey). With 3:39 left in the game, the Cardinals pulled within one, and made it a match for the remainder of the game. Nate Davis (Dayton, Ohio / Stivers) clenched the game with four baskets from the charity line to end the game.

Heidelberg had four players score in double digits. Leading the team was Davis with 14 points, adding seven rebounds and two blocks. Paramore and Fortkamp put up 12, while Tuley added 10 and grabbed seven from the glass. Givner led the team in assists with nine.

For the Cardinals, Chris Davis led the team with a double-double, 20-12. Also contributing was Max Van Meter and Mark Louks with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Berg ends OAC regular season play this Saturday at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
