Grand Rapids, Mich. – November 20, 2010 – In the championship game of the 10th annual Calvin Tip-Off Tournament, the Heidelberg University men’s basketball team was defeated by Grace Bible College 76-66.
The Berg drops to 1-1 on the year, while Grace improves to 7-2 on the year.
Offensively, Heidelberg was paced by three players in double digits. Junior Darrion Capers (Clayton, Ohio / Trotwood-Madison) had a team-leading 18 points, while sophomore Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Harvest Preparatory) and senior Kyle Tuley (Berea, Ohio / Berea) had 16 and 13 points, respectively.
In the first half, Heidelberg had an early 7-4 lead when Givner found Tuley for a fastbreak layup.
Grace would regain and maintain the lead for the duration of the half and would go up 40-37 at intermission.
After halftime, the Berg would continue to chip at the lead and would knot things up 44-44 as Givner once again connected with Capers, this time for a jumper.
Grace took its largest lead when it went up 70-55 when John Oostema scored behind the arc with just under seven minutes remaining.
Heidelberg would finish with an 11-6 run, but would come up short overcoming its deficit.
Sophomore Nate Davis (Dayton, Ohio / Stivers) grabbed a team-leading four boards and led the defense with three rejections.
