Angola, Ind. – November 27, 2010 – The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team could not overcome a 16-point deficit at halftime, as it dropped to Trine University 72-67.
The Berg falls to 2-2 on the year, while the Thunder improves to 4-1.
For the first four and half minutes of the game, both teams traded off the lead. However, Trine would go on an 18-6 run in the next 10 minutes and would lead 31-17.
Heidelberg would trial the Thunder 41-25 at intermission.
For the second game in a row, the Berg came out of the locker room a rejuvenated team. Right out of the gates, Heidelberg went on a 14-4 run.
The Berg battled to the very end with coming as close as three points with 10 seconds remaining when sophomore Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Harvest Preparatory) made a layup bringing Trine's lead to 70-67.
The Thunder successfully converted on two late free throws to seal the 72-67 win.
Leading the offense for Heidelberg was Givner with 15 points to go along with a game-high five steals.
Senior Kyle Tuley (Berea, Ohio / Berea) and sophomore Nate Davis (Dayton, Ohio / Stivers) added 14 points each, while Davis grabbed down a team-high nine boards to go along with a game-high four blocks.
Also contributing was junior Pat Barrett (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) and Darion Capers (Clayton, Ohio / Trotwood-Madison) who scored nine and eight points, respectively.
Freshman Victor Fortkamp (Saint Henry, Ohio / Saint Henry) added five points and three boards off the bench.
Trine’s Scott Rogers paced four Thunder players with double figures, while scoring a game-high 21 points. Rogers led Trine on the glass with eight boards, while Noah Veach recorded seven.
The Berg is back in action as it opens its Ohio Athletic Conference slate on Wednesday, Dec. 1 when it travels to Baldwin-Wallace College at 7:30 p.m.
