Men’s Hoops Wraps Two-Game Home Set Wednesday with John Carroll

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team will look to snap a two-game losing slide Wednesday, Feb. 1 when it closes a brief two-game home stand by hosting John Carroll University in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Heidelberg (6-13, 4-8 OAC) is coming off an 80-73 loss Saturday to Muskingum University. Junior honorable mention All-OAC forward Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) recorded his fourth double-double of the season, leading the Student Princes with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore forward Victor Fortkamp (St. Henry) added 11 points and junior guard Quintin Aden (Canal Winchester/Harvest Prep) tallied 10 markers as the Berg shot 41.2 (21-of-51) percent from the field, its second straight game shooting over 40 percent.

Fourth-year head coach Anthony Gholson will likely start junior Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Harvest Prep), senior C.J. Powell (Detroit, Mich./Bishop Foley) and Aden in the backcourt and Davis and Fortkamp at the post positions. Givner leads the scoring attack for the Tri-Color, averaging 13.3 points per game. He tallies 4.3 rebounds per game and is fifth in the OAC with 60 assists. Fortkamp averages 11.5 ppg., 4.9 rpg. and shoots 55.3 (83-for-150) percent from the field, good for fourth in the OAC. Davis nearly averages a double-double with 11.3 ppg. and 8.4 rpg., ranking third in the league, is fifth with a 53.7 (80-for-149) shooting percentage and leads the circuit with 40 blocks. Powell scores 3.9 ppg. and averages 1.9 rpg.

The Student Princes score 71.1 ppg., pull down 37.8 rpg. and shoot 43.8 percent overall. They are also first in the OAC with 4.1 blocks per game.

JCU (14-4, 9-3 OAC) have won two straight games and four of their last five following an 83-56 victory Saturday over Ohio Northern University. Five Blue Streaks scored in double figures, led by Kyle Hubbard’s 15 points and 14 tallies from Mark Hester. JCU shot 53.7 (29-of-54) percent from the field and outrebounded the Polar Bears by 15.

Twentieth-year head coach Mike Moran will likely start guards Corey Shontz, Joey Meyer and Michael Harnett and post players Mark Hester and Kenny Janz. Shontz is ranked within the top 10 of the OAC in five statistical categories, averaging 16.7 ppg. (third), shooting 51.2 (111-of-217) percent from the field (sixth) and 45.3 (39-of-86) percent from beyond the arc (first), passing for 77 assists (first) and tallying 38 steals (third). Hester scores 12.8 ppg., is fourth in the OAC with 7.2 rpg. and shoots 47.1 (80-of-170) percent from the field. Joey Meyer tallies 7.7 ppg. and shots 41.3 (45-of-109) percent, including 40.0 (24-of-60) percent from long range, good for seventh in the OAC. Hartnett also averages 7.7 ppg. and shoots 37.5 (33-of-88) from three point range and 76.3 (29-of-38) from the foul line. Janz chips in 3.8 ppg. and 5.1 rpg.

The Blue Streaks lead the OAC in scoring (83.4 ppg.), rebounding (39.7 rpg.), scoring margin (plus-10.3 ppg.), three point shooting (37.8 percent ), steals (183) and turnover margin (plus-2.8 per game).

Heidelberg sits in a three-way tie for seventh place in the OAC standings with six regular season games remaining on the schedule, just two games behind fifth place Baldwin-Wallace College and sixth place ONU. JCU is tied with Capital University for first place.

JCU has won seven of the last 10 games in the all-time series, including three straight. Four of the last seven contests have been decided by seven points or less. In the last game between the two schools, a 94-68 Blue Streak win on Jan. 18 in University Heights, Fortkamp scored 16 points on six-of-nine shooting, Givner added 15 markers and five assists and Davis had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, but the Berg shots just 36.5 (23-of-63) percent. Three Blue Streaks—Kyle Hubbard, Shontz and Harnett—had 14 points and Hester tallied 13 points and game-high 15 rebounds, as JCU shot above 40 percent overall and from the three point line and committed just 12 turnovers.

Following Wednesday's game, the Berg will travel to Bexley, Ohio for a men's and women's OAC doubleheader at Capital University on Saturday, Feb. 4.
