Heidelberg Hosts Capital in OAC Opener

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team will open Ohio Athletic Conference play Wednesday, Nov. 30 when it hosts Capital University at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Heidelberg (1-2) is coming off a narrow, 67-66 loss at Albion (Mich.) College (Nov. 22), in which a tip-in at the buzzer beat the ‘Berg. Despite the loss, four Student Princes scored in double figures, led by senior guard Darion Capers (Clayton/Trotwood-Madison), who tallied 17 points on a five-of-seven shooting performance and matched junior honorable mention All-OAC forward Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) for a game-high eight rebounds.

Capital (2-2) is looking to end its two-game losing skid following a 90-76 loss in its home opener against Denison University. Michael Sommer and Kelly Winter poured in 22 and 20 points, respectively, against Denison.

Four of five Student Prince starters are averaging better than 10.0 points per game, led by Capers (16.3), sophomore forward Victor Fortkamp (St. Henry) (14.7), Davis (12.0) and junior second-team All-OAC guard Dane Giver (Pittsburgh, Pa./Harvest Prep). Davis also averages a team-best 8.7 rebounds per game to lead a unit that has posted a plus-11.3 rebounding margin, and has blocked seven shots. Junior guard Quentin Aden (Canal Winchester/Harvest Prep), who has passed for six assists, will direct the offense.

The Crusaders are led in scoring by Spencer Niekamp (16.3 ppg.), Winter (14.3 ppg.) and Sommer (13.5 ppg.). Niekamp, Winter and Ben Jackson are tied for the team-lead with 4.5 rebounds per game and Winter boasts a 2.0 assists-to-turnover ratio. Capital shoots 48.8 percent (101-of-215) as a team and averages 32.0 rpg.

Following their conference opener, the Student Princes will face OAC foe Wilmington College on Saturday, Dec. 3 in Wilmington.
