‘Berg Men’s Basketball Hosts Baldwin-Wallace and Former Coach Duane Sheldon on Wednesday

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team continues its Ohio Athletic Conference slate Wednesday, Dec. 7 when the Student Princes host Baldwin-Wallace College at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. Former Heidelberg head coach Duane Sheldon will be making his fourth return to Tiffin since leaving the Berg for the same role at his alma mater.

The game will be broadcast live by both WTTF 1300 AM/93.3 FM and on the ‘Berg Athletics Network. Jon Kerns and John Cullen have the call on WTTF, while Jeff Garvin and Drew Felton have the call on the ‘BAN. Sheldon, who is 0-3 against his former team in Tiffin, is looking for his 100th career win, 64 of which he earned while leading the Student Princes for five seasons.

Heidelberg (1-4, 0-2 OAC) comes into Wednesday’s contest following a 92-66 loss at Wilmington College on Saturday and looking to snap a four-game losing skid.  Against the Quakers, junior honorable mention All-OAC forward Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) (13 points), sophomore forward Victor Fortkamp (St. Henry) (11) and junior guard Quintin Aden (Canal Winchester/Harvest Prep) (10), who combined for 34 of the team’s 66 points and was 14-of-20 shooting, as the Berg shot 50.0 percent (24-of-48) overall for the second time this season.

Four Student Princes—senior guard Darion Capers (Clayton/Madison-Trotwood) (14.4, 5.0), Fortkamp (13.4, 5.2), Davis (12.6, 9.2) and junior second-team All-OAC guard Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Harvest Prep) (11.2, 5.8)—are averaging more than 10 points and five rebounds per game. Givner also ranks third in the conference with 3.8 assists per game, while Davis is third in rebounding and leads the circuit with 2.6 blocks per game.

Capers, Fortkamp, Davis and junior guard Quintin Aden (Canal Winchester/Harvest Prep) each shoot better than 44 percent from the field, as the ‘Berg shoots 46.6 percent (135-of-290) collectively and scores 71.4 ppg. Heidelberg also holds a plus-9.4 rebounding margin per game over its opponents.

Off the bench, senior Zach Golec (Dennison/Claymont) and sophomore Mike Petrie (Columbus/Beechcroft) have played in all five contests. Golec scores 2.0 ppg. and is five-of-seven shooting from the field. Petrie tallies 5.8 ppg. and has made a team-high seven three-pointers.

B-W (4-1, 1-0 OAC) travels to Tiffin riding a three-game win streak following a stunning 93-74 upset of defending OAC champion and fourth-ranked Marietta College. Kevin Krakowiak led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points, Grant Fairhurst made five three-pointers and finished with 16 markers, Kyle Payne contributed 10 points and grabbed a game-high five rebounds, and Chris Ameen and Aaron Selmek added 11 and 10 points, respectively. B-W shot 57.4 percent (35-of-61) from the field and made 12 triples.

Payne leads B-W in scoring (13.8 ppg.) and rebounding (6.2 rpg.) and Krakowiak matches Payne with 13.8 ppg. Tyler Ferrell averages 6.0 ppg. and 4.8 rpg., Ben Umbel scores 5.6 ppg., pulls down 4.6 rpg. and leads with 17 steals and 15 assists. Cabbil scores 3.8 ppg. and has 14 assists to his credit.

Off the bench, Fairhurst, Ameen and Scott Branchick have appeared in all five games. Fairhurst is third on the team in scoring at 8.8 ppg. and has made a team-high 14 treys. Ameen tallies 8.0 ppg. and grabs 4.8 rpg.

Following Wednesday’s game, the Student Princes will take to the road for a men’s and women’s OAC doubleheader at Muskingum University on Saturday, Dec. 10. Tip for the women’s game is at 2 p.m., while the men play at 4 p.m.
