WILMINGTON, Ohio - It might've taken a little longer than expected, but the Heidelberg University men's basketball team got back on the winning track with a 73-71 win at Wilmington College on Saturday.
The opening tip was delayed two hours because the bus carrying the Student Princes to Wilmington experienced mechanical issues.
All five Heidelberg starters reached double-figures in the win, which improved the Student Princes' record to 5-5, 1-4 in the OAC.
The Quakers (4-7, 1-4 OAC) opened up an eight point lead with six minutes left in the first half. Heidelberg rallied to take a two point lead into halftime. Senior Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, PA/Harvest Prep) capped off an 18-8 'Berg run with a lay-up just before the buzzer. Givner finished with 13 point and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Heidelberg never trailed in the second half, despite only leading by as many as six points.
Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) scored two of his team-high 17 points on a lay-up with just over a minute to play. His basket put Heidelberg up four.
Following a Quaker lay-up, Heidelberg milked the clock and played solid defense en route to the win.
Freshman Ishaam Smith Jr. (Richmond Heights) hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. Freshman Jackson Blue (West Chester/Lakota West) added 11 while senior Quintin Aden Jr. (Canal Winchester/Harvest Prep) had 10.
The Student Princes return to action on Friday, December 28. They travel to the Captains Shootout in Newport News, Virginia, hosted by Christopher Newport University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
