'Berg Falls in Second Half

Andrew Lemmon (Port Clinton, Ohio / Port Clinton) hit his eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 14 boards, but it still was not enough to see the Berg to victory. Baldwin-Wallace College defeated the Heidelberg College men’s basketball team 87-84 in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest at B-W. With its win, the B-W improved to 8-12 overall and 5-8 in the OAC, while Heidelberg dropped to 15-5 overall and 9-4 in the OAC.

In the first half, the Student Princes jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the 18:46 mark when Chad Szalay (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) made a three-pointer. B-W then outscored Heidelberg 15-7 to take a 15-13 lead with 13:02 left when Kyle Rockwell scored on a layup.  Heidelberg then went on a 29-17 run to build it largest lead of the game at 42-32 with 2:42 left before the intermission when Lemmon followed a missed shot with a rebound basket. Heidelberg ended the half with a 44-40 lead.

In the second, the Berg held the lead until the Yellow Jackets took it back at 68-64 with 9:48 left when Kyle Brown made a jump shot. B-W upped its lead to six points at the 3:50 mark when Paul Glass tipped in a missed B-W shot for an 81-75 lead.

Heidelberg then scored the next four points to cut the lead to two. After a B-W layup,  Szalay countered with a three-pointer at the 1:17 mark to make it a one-point game at 83-82. B-W’s Andrew Bene then made a jumper with 19 seconds left to make it 85-82 and Brian Schmidt (Hinckley, Ohio / Brunswick) countered with six seconds remaining to make it 85-84. The Yellow Jackets would not be subdued, unfortunately, and Louis Tumblin made two foul shots with three seconds left to end the scoring.

Along with Lemmon’s double-double, Szalay led the team in scoring with 20 points, while Schmidt and Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) also contributed 16 apiece. For B-W, Tumblin hit a career-high with 27 points on the night, followed by Brendan Schuler who helped the team out with 12 points and eight assists.

Heidelberg returns to action Saturday, February 9, at home against Marietta College. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
