Lemmon becomes Third Player on the Year to Hit 1,000
Senior forward Andrew Lemmon (Port Clinton, Ohio / Port Clinton) of the Heidelberg College men’s basketball team recorded 15 points in a 93-66 victory over visiting Marietta College to become the 27th player in men’s basketball history to reach 1,000 points. Lemmon accomplished the feat in the home venue of ’Berg basketball, Seiberling Gymasium.
Lemmon attempted a three from the left wing and was fouled in the act of shooting with 11:00 left in the second half. He missed the first of three free throws but followed with two consecutive to record his 999th and 1,000th career point in a ’Berg uniform. For his career, Lemmon currently stands at exactly 1,000. Lemmon is the third player this season for Heidelberg to accomplish such a feat. He joins Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) and Brian Schmidt (Hinckley, Ohio / Brunswick) as members of the 1,000 point club, and all of which will be 2008 Heidelberg graduates.
The win improves Heidelberg to 16-5 overall and 10-4 in the OAC. The 10 wins in league play tops its win total from a season ago, and marks the most OAC wins since registering 10 during the 1996-97 campaign. The loss drops the Pioneers to 6-15 on the year and 2-12 in league action.
Heidelberg took control early, jumping out to a 20-8 lead on a Schmidt lay up just over five minutes into the contest. Marietta responded with a Jordan Cox three-pointer to pull within nine points on the ensuing possession. Shriver then hit a three-pointer to ignite an 8-0 ’Berg run to take a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest. Heidelberg held a 50-29 lead at the break.
Shriver was fouled shooting a three-pointer to put three points on the board the old fashioned way to start the second half and Heidelberg cruised to the win. A Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) trey gave Heidelberg its largest lead of the game at 36 points, 72-46, with 13:04 left on the clock. The Berg would not let Marietta pull within less than 24 points for the remainder of the game.
Lemmon grabbed 11 rebounds, to go along with his 15 points, to mark his ninth double-double on the season. Also scoring in double figures was Schmidt with a game-high 19 points, Shriver with 16 points and Chad Szalay (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) recorded 14 points. Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) dished out a team-high five assists.
Heidelberg returns to action at John Carroll University on Wednesday, Feb. 13. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
