Sheldon Named DIII News February Coach of the Month
Sixth-year head coach Duane Sheldon of the Heidelberg College men’s basketball team has been named the February Coach of the Month according to the DIII News, the monthly newsletter of Division III men’s basketball.
DIII News is the leading publication that covers Division III men’s basketball. The publication focuses on up to the minute news, regional reports, standings and records for all Division III teams.
Sheldon received the coach of the month honor after leading the Berg to an 8-1 record in the month of February. Heidelberg’s final win in February was a convincing 99-80 win over Baldwin-Wallace College in the semifinals of the 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. The win over B-W earned Heidelberg its sixth trip to the OAC Championship game, which the Berg topped No. 1 seeded Capital University 83-75 to win the program’s first OAC Tournament Title and start the month of March out on a winning note.
In February, Heidelberg outscored its opponents 802-670 in nine games. Aside from its OAC semifinal win, Heidelberg posted its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2005.
Heidelberg continues its 2008 run in the postseason with its third appearance in the NCAA Championships. By virtue of its automatic bid following its conference title Heidelberg will travel to Centre College in Danville, Ky. to face Ohio Wesleyan University in a first round game on March 7 beginning at 6:00 p.m.
