Under the point-scoring prowess of Andrew Lemmon (Port Clinton, Ohio / Port Clinton) and Chad Szalay (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview), the Heidelberg College men’s basketball team defeated Defiance College 86-74. Lemmon led the team with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Szalay followed close behind with 14 points and a team-high three steals.

Heidelberg rises to 2-0 on the year, while Defiance drops to 1-2.

The Student Princes jumped out to an early lead in the first half, scoring nine unanswered points for a score of 17-8 in the sixth minute of play. The Yellow Jackets would respond with baskets of their own, but not enough as Heidelberg walked into the locker-room at the half leading 47-29.

They would retain the lead for the rest of the night, at one point the Berg was ahead by as much as 29 points. In the last four minutes Defiance made a valiant effort at a comeback, holding the Berg at 83 points while climbing its way up 10 points for a score of 83-70. Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, Heidelberg held its ground and finished the game on top.

Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) recorded five assists during the game for the Berg, while Brian Schmidt (Hinckley, Ohio / Brunswick) shot 6-9 from inside the line.

On top for Defiance was Nick Sales with 16 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Anthony Pettaway was second with 11 points.

Heidelberg faces off next against Bluffton University for the team’s home opener in Seiberling Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24.
