Shriver Hits 1000th Point; 'Berg Still Undefeated
Senior guard Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) hit his 1000th career point in the second half of Heidelberg College’s home-opener win over visiting Bluffton University, 96-76. Shriver drove from the left baseline and pulled up for the jumper making it from about eight feet out with 4:54 left in the game.
The moment will forever be part of ’Berg basketball lore due to the fact that at right about the sixth minute mark, just before the milestone shot, Shriver’s toddler brother Austin mistakenly pulled the fire alarm. It was still ringing throughout Seiberling Gymnasium as the ball fell through the net.
Shriver added a lay-up and three-pointer to his total before the completion of the game, bringing his current number up to 1,006 over the course of his four years as Student Prince. He is just the 25th player in the history of Heidelberg’s men’s program to record quadruple digits.
“He has been solid at both ends of the floor,” commented Heidelberg’s head coach Duane Sheldon about Shriver, “He deserves it; he works extremely hard.”
Heidelberg jumped out to an early lead in the game, posting 23 points in just under six minutes. The Beavers only managed to match the Berg for nine of them. Andrew Lemmon (Port Clinton, Ohio / Port Clinton) was on fire in the first half for the Berg, tossing in four three-pointers in just over the first three minutes of play. He would end up being 5-8 from the arc, 8-11 overall on the day.
The Student Princes entered the second half up 58-37 and never once lost the lead. With under a minute left in the game, Greg Tyson Jr. (Lima, Ohio / Lima Senior) stole the ball off Bluffton’s Cam Saylor and drove it down court slamming it through the rim for the lone dunk of the game. Tyson also scored the last shot of the day for the Berg off an assist from Jim Smalley (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / Midpark) at the 45 second mark.
Overall for Heidelberg, Lemmon was atop the team offensively with a total 22 points, and tied Brian Schmidt (Hinckley, Ohio / Brunswick) for a team high nine rebounds; both recorded two offensive and seven defensive.
Nate Overmyer led the way for Bluffton with 16 points. Meanwhile, the Beavers’ own P. J. Juenger and Justin Rufenacht racked up eight and seven rebounds respectively.
The win brings the Berg’s record up to 3-0 overall, while dropping Bluffton down to 2-2 on the year. Heidelberg resumes play on Monday, November 26 at Hiram College. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
