Heidelberg Tops the Terriers
For the second time this season, the Heidelberg College men’s basketball team has reached the triple-digit mark. The men defeated Hiram College 105-76, bringing their record up to 4-0 on the year.
Heidelberg started the game out on a high note, leading 6-0 at just over two minutes in after having two three-pointers sunk by Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) and Andrew Lemmon (Port Clinton, Ohio / Port Clinton). They would retain the lead for the rest of the game. The first half would end with five straight points being scored by Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel), leaving the Student Princes ahead as they left for the locker room 40-29.
At the start of the second half, Hiram’s Chris Roberts dropped a lay-up in off an assist from Mike Staley. The nine-point difference is the closest the Terriers would get for the rest of night in terms of attempting to takeover the lead, as Heidelberg answered right away with another three-pointer from Shriver. Heidelberg’s defense took over in the last 20 minutes of play, as the Student Princes continued to score, but held the Terriers firmly at bay.
With the Berg holding a firm 29-point lead (99-70), newcomer Kyle Brubaker (Hamler, Ohio / Patrick Henry) landed a jumper into the net to put the team up over 100-points for the evening. Jim Smalley (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / Midpark) would go on to score four more points for Heidelberg, resulting in a final score of 105-76.
Leading the way offensively for the Berg was Kinn and Chad Szalay (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) with 16 points each. Szalay also contributes four steals to the mix, while Kinn shot 6-8 on the night, 4-5 from the free-throw line. For the Terriers, Roberts led the night with 18 points and two steals, while Staley contributed 17 points and three assists.
Heidelberg begins Ohio Athletic Conference play this weekend on Saturday, December 1 versus Wilmington College. The Student Princes will travel to the Quakers home court; tip off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
