'Berg Basketball Tops Mount Union

Heidelberg College’s men’s basketball team made their trip to Alliance, Ohio worth it this evening, by beating their Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Mount Union College 77-62. The win brings Heidelberg’s record up to 6-1 on the year, 2-1 in the OAC, while Mount falls to 2-5 overall, 0-3 in the OAC.

13 seconds into play, Andrew Lemmon (Port Clinton, Ohio / Port Clinton) hit a jumper for the Berg, giving them an early lead. The Purple Raiders would tie the Student Princes twice in the first half, but never surpass them for the remainder of the contest.

Chad Szalay (Lorain, Ohio) helped the Berg keep their lead in the first half by lighting up the scoreboard with 12 points and two steals. His last points of the half came with just under two minutes left when he hit a three pointer off an assist from Greg Tyson Jr. (Lima, Ohio / Lima Senior). Lemmon aided the defense with six rebounds.

The second half started off mirroring the first, with Lemmon hitting a three pointer and Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) receiving the assist on the play. The Berg rarely let Mount get within 10 points of their lead, as the defense stepped up their game, stealing the ball from the Raiders a total eight times. Szalay grabbed four of them, while Matt Eberle (Grove City, Ohio / Central Crossing) snuck two away from the home team.

Overall, Szalay and Lemmon led the team offensively with 19 and 14 points apiece. Szalay’s six steals and Brian Schmidt’s (Hinckley, Ohio / Brunswick) 11 rebounds aided the team’s defense in the win as well.

For Mount Union, Chris Switzer headed up the Raiders offensive stand with 18 points on the night, while he and Matt Fatigante combined for six steals. Chris Crawford and Jay Mathis recorded five rebounds each to lead their team.

Heidelberg tips off next against Marietta College on Saturday, December 15 on the Pioneers home court at 3:00 p.m.
