Speed Leads Heidelberg to OAC Win

The Marietta College Pioneers just could not keep up with the Student Princes, as the Heidelberg College men’s basketball team kept the game moving. Heidelberg won the Ohio Athletic Conference match-up 86-63, raising the team’s record to 7-1 overall, 3-1 in the OAC. Marietta falls to 2-7 on the year, 0-4 in OAC action.

Heidelberg jumped out to a 14-8 lead at the start of the game, with Shawn Shriver (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) hitting three three-pointers during the scoring run. The men’s lead only increased as the half continued, with Shriver topping 12 points before the buzzer sounded. The teams headed for the locker rooms with the Berg up 46-24.

The second half saw an increase in offensive play from Marietta, but it was too little too late as Heidelberg’s winning momentum only increased. Two more Heidelberg players would hit double-digits in the point column for the game. Brian Schmidt (Hinckley, Ohio / Brunswick) and Chad Szalay (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) both posted large numbers for the Berg, hitting 11 and 14 apiece in the second half. The game was capped off in the last four seconds as Greg Tyson Jr. (Lima, Ohio / Lima Senior) slammed the ball through the rim for his second dunk of the game.

Schmidt finished the game with his third straight double-double of the season, racking up 11 points and 10 rebounds. Szalay led the team with 22 points for the contest, followed by Shriver with 14. Tyson aided the defense by blocking four of the Pioneers shots.

Adam Rockhold led Marietta with 17 points and four steals, while Daun Lutes and Bradley Hinton lit up the scoreboard with 12 points each.

Up next for the Berg is a trip to San Diego to participate in the San Diego Surf and Slam. Their first game of the tournament is on Friday, December 28 at 2 p.m. against George Fox.
