Bruins Hand 'Berg Tough Loss
It was a fight to the finish as the Heidelberg College men’s basketball team faced off against George Fox University during the opening round of the San Diego Surf N’ Slam held at San Diego City College. The Student Princes lost to the Bruins 60-57, dropping them to 7-2 for the year.
Each team took turns having the lead in the first half of play, but Shawn Shriver’s (Bellevue, Ohio / Western Reserve) 11 points helped place the Berg ahead at the half 35-25. Shriver hit two three-pointers in the first five minutes and never looked back. Aggressive play could be seen on the defensive side of the ball too for Heidelberg, with Chad Szalay (Lorain, Ohio / Clearview) stealing twice before the buzzer.
The second half did not go as well as the first for the Berg, with the Bruins managing to hold them to a mere 22 points. The Bruins obviously regrouped and changed up their game plan during the break, as Shriver was practically shut out at the basket, making only one jumper as play restarted. The Berg just could find its momentum to retain the lead, even as Andrew Lemmon (Port Clinton, Ohio / Port Clinton) and Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) reached up for five rebounds apiece in the second to help Heidelberg keep a handle on the ball.
Overall for the Berg, Brian Schmidt (Hinckley, Ohio / Brunswick) posted the biggest numbers sinking 15 points, with Shriver close behind, having finished up with 13 points. Kinn led the defense with eight rebounds. George Fox’s Brent Satern got the closest out of anyone on the day of recording a double-double, posting 18 points and nine assists.
The Berg continues their tournament play tomorrow in San Diego at 2 p.m.
