Kinn Stings in Overtime at B-W
Junior forward Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) scored eight points in overtime to help lead the Heidelberg men's basketball team to a 92-87 victory over Baldwin-Wallace College in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest in Ursprung Gymnsaium in Berea, Ohio.
Heidelberg improved to 6-10 overall and 3-6 in the OAC, while Baldwin-Wallace falls to 6-10, 2-7. For the year, the Berg is 2-0 in overtime contests, both coming against league foes.
The game opened up with some hot shooting on both ends of the court. Jim Smalley (Middleburg, Ohio / Midpark) gave Heidelberg an early five-point lead, 15-10, with a trey just over five minutes into the game. B-W battled back to eventually knot the game at 25 apiece with 8:53 left in the half and Ben Dobberstein nailed a jumper on the Yellow Jackets next possession to give the host school its first lead since the opening tip.
B-W extended its lead to four-points before Heidelberg's Jake Hessey (Crestline, Ohio / Colonel Crawford) nailed two-straight treys to give the Berg a 31-29 advantage with 5:29 left before intermission. B-W answered on the ensuing possession and went on to close out the half on a 19-5 run to take a 48-36 lead into the locker room.
Heidelberg's offense opened the second half as it started the game, while its defense slowed the effectiveness of the B-W shooting. The Berg came out of the break and put together a 10-2 scoring run to pull within 51-46, with 15:40 on the clock.
Baldwin-Wallace responded with a 9-4 run of its own to push its lead back to double digits at 60-50, with 11:00 minutes to play. Heidelberg chipped away at the Yellow Jackets lead and pulled within six, 65-59, following a John Miller (Millersburg, Ohio / West Holmes) trey three minutes later.
After a quick breather, Miller returned to the game and sank two more from long range, with the later pulling the Berg within three points, 75-72, with 2:35 left in the contest.
Three-straight defensive stops by the Berg led to a 5-0 run and a change of the guard, as Heidelberg overtook the scoreboard, 77-75, with 1:11 left in the contest. Smalley connected from the right corner for a trey to give the Berg the lead.
Baldwin-Wallace took a timeout and returned with a Paul Glass old fashioned three-point play to jump back on top, 78-77 with 54 seconds left. Louis Tumblin added another point from the charity stripe to give the Yellow Jackets a two-point cushion with 12 seconds left.
Heidelberg's Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) dribbled the length of the court, picking up a foul to gain two free throws. Calver connected on both to tie the game at 79-79 with eight ticks left.
Baldwin-Wallace's Promis Cabbil drew a block with less than two seconds remaining, but failed to convert from the line, sending the game into overtime.
The Yellow Jackets scored two early free throws in the extra stanza before Kinn answered with eight-straight points to give the Berg an 87-81 lead with 1:27 left. B-W pulled within a point, 88-87, with 19 seconds remaining, but Smalley and Quintin Aden (Canal Winchester, Ohio / Harvest Prepartory) hit four-consecutive from the charity stripe as time ticked away to help preserve the win.
For the game, Heidelberg shot 61.8 percent (34-of-55) compared to a 45.9 clip (34-of-74) by B-W. However, the Yellow Jackets held a 38-33 advantage on the glass.
Leading three in double figures for the Berg was Kinn with a career-high 27 points. Kinn connected on 12-of-17 shots in the win, and added a team-leading eight boards. Backing Kinn was Smalley with 12 points and Kyle Tuley (Berea, Ohio / Berea) added 10. Miller finished with a career-high nine.
