The Berg's Attempt to Sweep Quakers on the Year Fails

Junior point guard Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) tied his career-high of 17 points to lead three in double figures, but it was not enough to help the Heidelberg men’s basketball team to upend host Wilmington College. The Quakers topped the Berg 80-69 to even the series on the year at a game apiece.

Following the contest Wilmington stands at 12-5 overall and 8-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while Heidelberg is 6-11 overall and 3-7 against league foes.

Calver connected on 5-of-9 from the floor, with two coming from long range, while sinking 5-of-6 free throws. He also dished out three assists and grabbed three boards. Backing Calver was Kyle Tuley (Berea, Ohio / Berea). Tuley came off the bench to score 11 points and Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio /New Riegel) added 10 points and a team-leading eight rebounds.

The Berg turned the ball over 20 times compared to 13 by the Quakers. The Quakers held a 17-9 advantage in points off of turnovers. For the contest, Heidelberg shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48), while Wilmington hit a 51.7 clip (30-of-58). The Berg held a slim 30-29 advantage on the glass.

Wilmington opened the game with 10-straight points before the Berg found the scoreboard. The Quakers first half lead was extended to as many as 13 points on three occasions; with the later coming with 4:35 left in the half, which led to a 39-28 lead at the break.

Heidelberg tried its hand at a run to open the second half and cut its deficit to six, 40-34, with 17:56 on the clock. Wilmington pushed its lead back to double-digits, but the Berg would not go away as Jim Smalley (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / Midpark) made an old fashioned three-point play to pull the Berg within seven, 48-41, with 15:09 on the clock. The seven points would be as close as the Berg could get and suffered an eventual 80-69 loss.
