Trio Picks Up OAC Weekly Honors

Three Heidelberg student-athletes picked up a weekly Ohio Athletic Conference accolade for their respective sport for the week of January 26, as announced by the league office today.

Junior Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) was tabbed the men’s basketball player of the week, while sophomore grappler Jerrad Hoxie (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) was named the wrestler of the week and freshman Tomika Brown (Bellefontaine, Ohio / Bellefontaine) earned women’s field athlete of the week accolades.

Throughout the 2008-09 winter season, Heidelberg has claimed a total of seven OAC Player of the Week accolades with this week serving as the second multiple honors week of the year. Two weeks ago the track and field team were recognized with two athletes of the week for their efforts on the indoor track.

Kinn helped lead the men’s basketball team to a 1-1 record last week. He averaged a team-leading 18.5 points a game and 8.0 rebounds a night, to go along with two assists and one steal. Kinn scored a career-high 27 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the field and a 3-for-4 day at the free throw line to lead the Berg to a 92-87 overtime win at Baldwin-Wallace College on Wednesday. He scored eight of his 27 points in the overtime period to help seal the victory.

Hoxie continues to provide a solid lead off at 125 pounds for the nationally ranked wrestling team. Most recently he helped lead the Berg to a 36-3 win at Ohio Northern University on Tuesday. The win improved the Berg to 4-0 in OAC duals and 7-3 overall. Hoxie faced ONU’s no. 9 David Penny and pinned him in 6:56 to give the Berg an early advantage. The match with Penny was a rematch of last year’s OAC final, which Hoxie upset top-seeded Penny to earn a trip to nationals.

Brown has made a significant impact in her first season with the track and field team. Last weekend the Berg took part in the unscored Northwest Ohio Invite hosted by the University of Findlay and Brown led the way with a first place in the high jump. Brown cleared 5’6”, which not only soared above the competition, but was a provisional qualifying mark for the 2009 NCAA Division III Championships in March at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Her mark currently ranks third in the nation and just missed an automatic qualifying height.
