Three Ball Leads to Student Prince Victory
The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team hosted Ohio Athletic Conference foe Baldwin-Wallace College in a battle for a much needed league win. Heidelberg pulled out a win in the end 77-71.
Following the win, the Student Princes improve to 7-13 overall and 4-9 in the OAC, while Baldwin-Wallace falls to 6-11 overall and 2-11 OAC
The first half featured twelve ties and seven lead changes, with neither team holding a lead larger than eight points. The Berg had a three point advantage with 2:10 left on the clock as they battled the Yellow Jackets for the remaining time. The Yellow Jackets pulled within two coming into the half, 28-26.
Baldwin-Wallace scored first in the second to tie the game for the eighth time and from then on it was a battle of defense, foul shooting, and three-point shooting. Baldwin-Wallace used a 6-0 run to extend its lead to eight, 44-37, with 12:32 on the clock. Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) scored seven straight points for the Berg to pull within two of the Yellow Jackets, 48-46, with just under ten minutes left. Coming down the stretch Jake Hessey (Crestline, Ohio / Colonel Crawford) hit two huge threes along with a Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) and John Miller (Millersburg, Ohio / West Holmes) three to give the Berg the lead back and that would never change.
For the game, Baldwin- Wallace connected on 29-of-59 shots from the field (42.4%) compared to a 25-for-56 outing by the Berg (44.6%). The Berg had the advantage from behind the arc as they went 8-of-16 (50%), while the Yellow Jackets were 0-of-10.
Leading four in double figures for the Berg was Kinn and Smalley both with 14 points each. Kinn add nine rebounds and went 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. Following them was Hessey with 13 points and a steal. Also getting into the action was Kyle Tuley (Berea, Ohio / Berea) and Calver both with 10 points. Tuley also had nine rebounds as Calver led all players with six assists and was 3-of-4 from the free throw line.
Leading the Yellow Jackets was Andrew Bene with 21 points and 14 boards. Also Dennis Santiago was in double figures with 16 points, hitting 6-of-9 from the field.
