Miscues Plaque 'Berg in Loss to JCU

The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team had difficulty holding onto the basketball in its Ohio Athletic Conference contest with John Carroll University. The trouble resulted in a 105-84 setback to the Blue Streaks in Seiberling Gymnasium, on the campus of Heidelberg.
 
For the contest, Heidelberg and John Carroll combined for 48 turnovers, with the Berg taking a hit with 34 miscues. Following the game, the Berg stands at 7-14 overall and 4-11 in the OAC, while JCU improves to 17-4 and holds onto first place in the league at 13-2.
 
Leading three players in double figures for Heidelberg was Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) with 21 points and 13 boards. Kinn registered his double-double in just one half, picking up 13 points and 12 boards in the first 20 minutes. Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) and Jim Smalley (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / Midpark) each finished with 10 points. Backing Kinn on the glass was Kyle Tuley (Berea, Ohio / Berea) with seven rebounds, to go along with eight points. Calver dished out six assists.
 
Maurice Haynes led the way for the Blue Streaks with 19 points, while Matt Crozier had six rebounds.
 
John Carroll connected on 36 of its 79 attempts from the field (45.6%), while the Berg hit 30 of 61 for 49.2 percent. Heidelberg held a 43-36 advantage on the glass.
 
The contest was a back and forth battle early on featuring five ties and neither team held more than a five point advantage. With the game tied at 21-21 with 11:42 left in the half, John Carroll’s Joe Meyer broke the deadlock and led the Blue Streaks to an eventual 13-point advantage, 42-29, with 4:34 on the clock. Heidelberg pulled within single digits on two occasions with the latter following a Tuley lay up in the final minutes before the half, but JCU answered to hold a 53-43 advantage at the break.
 
John Miller (Millersburg, Ohio / West Holmes) came off the bench and knocked down a trey to cut Heidelberg’s deficit to six, 60-54, just four minutes into the second period. John Carroll responded with an 18-4 run to take control of the game for the remainder of the evening.
