Gholson Announces 2008-09 Schedule

First-year head coach Anthony Gholson of the Heidelberg College men’s basketball team has announced the release of its 2008-09 schedule. The 25-game schedule features 12 contests to be played in the home of ’Berg basketball, Seiberling Gymnasium.

Heidelberg’s slate consists of 18 games in the rugged Ohio Athletic Conference, with the top-eight teams in the final regular season standings earning a spot in the OAC Tournament. The winner of the eight-team tournament earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

Gholson inherits a program that is coming off an overall record of 23-6, which stands second on the list for wins in a season. It was just the second 20-win season in the history of the Berg. Included in its final record was a 20-5 regular season record, which ties the 1983-84 team for the best regular season mark. Against OAC foes, Heidelberg finished at 14-4, good enough for second place. The Berg went on to upset No. 1 seed Capital University on its home court to claim the team’s first OAC Tournament Title, which earned Heidelberg an automatic bid to the program’s third NCAA Championship.

The season begins on Nov. 15 when Heidelberg travels to Pitt-Bradford for a 4:00 p.m. contest before opening its home slate Nov. 18 against cross-town rival Tiffin University at 7:30 p.m. A game with Defiance College Nov. 25 marks two-straight at home before heading on the road to Bluffton University Nov. 29.

Following its game at Bluffton, Heidelberg settles in Tiffin for four of its next five contests. Starting things off is its final non-conference game of the fall semester with Albion College Dec. 3. OAC action begins with Wilmington College Dec. 6 followed by Mount Union College (Dec. 13). Its home stand is halted with a trip to Ada, Ohio to take on Ohio Northern University (Dec. 17) before hosting Marietta College (Dec. 20).

The New Year begins with a break from league play when Heidelberg will take part in the Buffalo State College Tournament Jan. 2-3. The Buffalo, N.Y. drive begins a stretch of six of seven contests on the road.

Heidelberg travels to John Carroll University Jan. 7, while Otterbein College comes north to Seiberling Gymnasium Jan. 10 before the Berg travels to Capital  (Jan. 14), Muskingum College (Jan. 17), Baldwin-Wallace College (Jan. 21) and Wilmington (Jan. 24).

The Jan. 24th Wilmington game marks the beginning of the second half of the conference schedule for Heidelberg. Following its contest with the Quakers, Heidelberg has five home games and just three away contests to close out the regular season.
