"HOOPAPALOZA" Time

It was a Hoopapalooza in the Berg gymnasium Oct. 23 as the men’s and women’s basketball teams were introduced to students, staff and the community. The team held a pep rally to build enthusiasm for the upcoming season and offered plenty of prize opportunities.

An exciting announcement would kick off the night as announcer Aaron Nelson told students about the prizes being given. There would a chance for students to win $10,000 and another chance to win $350 for books. Students were announced for this opportunity based on a raffle ticket they received while walking in the door. The rules were that the student could not have participated on an organized basketball team over the last five years. Three students would shoot from different places to win. None were successful although there were some close calls.

In the midst of this the women’s basketball team was announced to the crowd running out with jerseys to throw into the stands. The men’s basketball team was also then announced.

Students competed in a fun contest for a signed ’Berg jersey. The students had to spin their heads on a baseball bat at half court. From there they ran toward the baskets in an attempt to make a simple shot.

As the evening went on the women’s team shared examples of their practice drills with the crowd. After a competition amongst the crowd, the men’s basketball team also showed some of their routine practice drills. The teams brought out some students to take on the task of trying to make a total of nine baskets from the three-point line.

The event came to an end as men’s basketball head coach Anthony Gholson called out raffle ticket numbers in order to give out jerseys to members of the crowd.
