Heidelberg Falls to Albion

The Heidelberg College men’s basketball team fought hard but was unable to top Albion College. Albion’s 95-84 win improves their record to 3-2, while Heidelberg drops to 3-2 on the season.

Heidelberg started the contest on top and was leading by as much as five after a three-pointer by junior Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) after five minutes of play. With nine minutes remaining in the first half, Albion took the lead. Heidelberg’s Jim Smalley (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / Midpark) pulled the Berg within one point with eight minutes remaining, but Albion did not give up the lead the rest of the game.

With just under four minutes remaining in the contest, senior Jake Hessey (Crestline, Ohio / Colonel Crawford) nailed a long three-pointer, making the score 86-79. A Hessey layup brought the Berg back within seven points with three minutes to go, but Albion stayed strong and pulled through with a victory.

Leading Heidelberg offensively was Hessey scoring a career high 27 points, including five three-pointers and a 100% shooting percentage (6-for-6) from the line. Smalley followed with 16 points, Calver with 14 and Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) with 11. On the defensive end, Smalley led the Berg with seven rebounds.
