Men's Basketball Suffers Road Loss at ONU

The Heidelberg College men’s basketball team suffered a 92-74 setback at Ohio Northern University tonight in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest. With the win ONU improves to 7-1 overall and remains atop the league standings at 3-0, while the Berg’s record evens at 4-4 and is 1-2 in league action.
 
In the first half Heidelberg’s Jake Hessey (Crestline, Ohio / Colonel Crawford) broke the eighth tie with two free throws with 1:31 left in the period. ONU responded with a Jake Cannan jumper that ignited a 6-0 run to close out the half and gave the Polar Bears a 36-32 lead at the intermission.
 
ONU utilized an 11-2 run midway through the second half to build a 66-52 advantage with 8:42 on the clock. Heidelberg cut its deficit to single digits on two occasions, but Ohio Northern outscored the Berg 18-9 over the final five minutes of the game to post the win.
 
For the game Heidelberg shot 47.2 percent (27-of-57) from the field compared to a 57.8 clip (37-of-64) by Ohio Northern. ONU also held a 33-36 advantage on the glass.
 
Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio /Shelby) and Hessey each finished with 17 points to lead the Berg. Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio /New Riegel) chipped in with 14 points and a team-leading eight rebounds, while Jim Smalley (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / Midpark) added 15.
 
ONU was lead by Kyle Meyer’s double-double consisting of 24 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Heidelberg returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 20 against Marietta College. Tip-off with the Pioneers is slated for 3:00 p.m.
