Last Second Shots Hit and Miss Versus Marietta

The Heidelberg College men’s basketball team executed a last second play almost to perfection. Two attempts at a game-winner hit the back of the rim and rolled off giving Marietta College a 70-69 victory in Seiberling Gymnasium today, December 20. Marietta and Heidelberg enter the holiday break with identical 4-5 records overall and 1-3 marks in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Heidelberg slowly but surely erased an 11-point halftime deficit and took over the scoreboard, 44-43, on a Jim Smalley (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / Midpark) jumper with 12:41 left in the game. Marietta responded on its next possession and regained the lead that it would hold for almost seven minutes until Chance Farnsworth (Wadsworth, Ohio / Highland) connected on one from long range with 5:38 on the clock. However Marietta answered with a Kyle Lindquist three-pointer.

Marietta and Heidelberg continued to battle and Jake Hessey (Crestline, Ohio / Colonel Crawford) finished a lay up and added two more free throws to put the Berg up three, 69-66, with 1:47 to play, but Marietta closed out the game with two-straight scores to post the win.

For the game, Heidelberg shot 42.9 percent (27-of-63) from the field compared to a 44.1 percent (26-of-59) outing by Marietta. The Berg held a slim 38-36 advantage on the glass.

Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) and Kyle Tuley (Berea, Ohio / Berea) led the Berg with 13 points apiece. Tuley hauled in a team-leading nine boards, while Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) added eight rebounds, to go along with six points and five assists. Hessey rounded out three in double figures with 12 points.

Daun Lautes led the way for Marietta with a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds. Trevor Halter added 14 points and eight boards.

Heidelberg is idle until it travels to Buffalo State for a four-team tournament Jan. 2-3.
