'Berg Raising Awareness in the Fight Against Cancer

Tiffin, Ohio – January 20, 2010 - During the Jan. 27 men’s basketball game against Otterbein College, you may notice head coach Anthony Gholson and the entire Heidelberg University staff making an interesting fashion statement: They will be wearing sneakers with their usual game attire to show their support of the American Cancer Society’s work to save lives from cancer.
 
The coaching staff will be wearing their sneakers as part of Coaches vs. Cancer, a collaborative initiative of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society. By wearing sneakers during the game, the coaching staff will be calling attention to how healthy lifestyle choices – including getting regular exercise and eating a healthy diet – can help reduce personal risk of cancer. 
 
Come out and show your support in the fight against cancer. All proceeds from the game will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Seiberling Gymnasium and fans are encouraged to demonstrate their support by wearing sneakers as well.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of college and high school coaches across the country, Coaches vs. Cancer participants have raised more than $55 million since 1993 to help the Society fund groundbreaking cancer research, provide up-to-date cancer information and education, advocate for public health policies that benefit communities, and deliver services that improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

Heidelberg athletic teams have helped raise awareness in numerous ways in the fight against cancer. Along with the men’s basketball Coaches vs. Cancer event, the women’s basketball team raises awareness for breast cancer research in February, while the softball team hosts an annual Strike Out Cancer game in the Spring.
