Petrie's Career Night Not Enough for Upset Minded Student Princes

Box Score | Season Stats

MARIETTA, Ohio - Petrie?  More like three-trie.

Heidelberg University junior Mike Petrie (Columbus/Beechcroft) scored a career-high 26 points, hitting eight 3-pointers in a 92-89 double-overtime loss to Marietta College on Saturday.

The eight 3-point field goals etches Petrie's name into the Heidelberg record book.  Three other Student Princes have hit eight, with Shawn Shriver accomplishing the feat in the 2005-06 season.

Heidelberg (9-12, 4-10 OAC) held a 12 point advantage at halftime.  Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, PA/Harvest Prep) scored all 12 of his points in the period.

In the second half, an Ishaam Smith Jr. (Richmond Heights) 3-pointer would extend the Student Prince lead to 17 at 47-30.  Smith finished with 18 points.

In front of their home crowd, Marietta (16-5, 12-2 OAC) would battle back.  The Pioneers used a 22-5 run over a span of nine minutes to tie the game at 52.

The tie would be a harbinger of things to come.

Marietta held a six-point lead in the game's final minute of regulation.  Petrie connected on two 3-pointers to tie the game at 70 and send the contest into overtime.

In the first extra frame, it was Marietta's turn for long-distance heroics.

Tyler Worstell connect from beyond the arc to knot the game at 79.

In the second overtime, the teams traded baskets until Marietta moved out to a five-point lead.

Petrie connected on his record-tying eighth 3-pointer with less than five seconds left, but Marietta iced the contest with free throws.

Four Student Princes finished in double-figures, including the 20th double-double of the career of Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers).  The senior finished with 15 points and 17 rebounds.

Heidelberg returns home for a Wednesday night showdown with Ohio Northern.  Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
