Heidelberg University cross country members ran in Anderson, Indiana at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional to close out a challenging 2012 season.
Junior Logan Leis (Zanesfield/Benjamin Logan) led the Heidelberg men, recording a time of 26:21.12, across the 8k course. Leis earned a 49th place finish in his third regional meet.
“Logan got after it today and led the team very well, said head coach Briana Hess. “He got out to a great start and put it all out there.”
Freshman Brad Palocko (Medina) has had an impressive season that was capped off with a 70th place finish at the Great Lakes Regional. Palocko ran a 26:38.36 for the Student Princes
“Palocko did well and I see great things from him in the future when he is 100% healthy,” said Hess.
Senior Dustin Kuess (Coldwater) finished third on the team with a time of 27:19.78. Kuess average a time of 5:29.9 per mile.
The freshmen trio of Avery Gatchell (Fostoria/Hopewell-Loudon), Zach Flint (Delaware/Hayes) and Lynn Leatherman (Liberty Center) showed well for the Berg in their first regional meet. The young trio finished the course in 27:43.95, 28:15.80 and 29:21.02 respectively.
“Flint had to step up and be our fifth guy, but he ran a tough race and achieved a huge personal best,” said Hess.
The Heidelberg women were led by senior Bobbi Custer (Wooster/Triad), who clocked a 23:44.90 over the 6k women’s course.
Junior Sophie Goobic (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) finished the race in 106th position with a time of 24:29.14.
“For the women, Bobbi and Sophie tried to position themselves early. They ran with a lot of heart today,” said Hess.
Freshman Erica Miller (Enon/Greenon), competing in her first regional meet, clocked a time of 25:40.12.
“Erica got her first regional under her belt and I’m excited to see her build off of today,” Hess commented.
The only three Heidelberg women competed in Anderson so the Berg ladies were not scored in the team standings.
