GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Seven individuals for the Heidelberg University men’s and women’s cross country teams set personal records today at the Calvin (Mich.) Invitational in Grand Rapids, Mich. The men’s team finished eighth of 18 teams and the women’s team placed eighth of 16 teams.
Setting personal records on the men’s side were senior John Gogle (Sunbury/Big Walnut), junior Kevin Neel (Wellington/New London), sophomore David Kindall (Sullivan/Black River), junior Dustin Kuess (Coldwater), and senior Jacob Hoffman (Shelby). Sophomore Sophie Goobic (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) and freshman Julia Darling (Coldwater) also set personal bests.
“Julia has been a huge surprise for us so far this season,” said second-year head coach Briana Shook. “She hadn’t run in two years, so it’s been nice to see her perform the way she has.
“Our men’s team ran a great race,” added Shook. “It’s still early in the season, but we’re starting to come around and we look ready to compete.”
In the men’s eight-kilometer race, senior Jordan Karnes (Edgerton) led the pack with a 23rd-place finish in a time of 25:46.94.
Junior Bobbi Custer (Woodstock/Triad) topped all ‘Berg runners in the women’s five-kilometer race with a time of 19:27.10.
Both teams will enjoy a two-week layoff before competing at the All-Ohio Championships in Cedarville Saturday, Sept. 30. Start times have not yet been announced.
