Top Story: Homecoming weekend at Heidelberg University features the football team in a match up with Baldwin-Wallace College on Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Frost-Kalnow Stadium. Heidelberg and third-year head coach Mike Hallett is in search of its first Ohio Athletic Conference victory and its third-consecutive win over the Yellow Jackets. Saturday’s contest marks the second-straight at home and is part of four home games in Heidelberg’s last five outings on the season. Prior to last week’s home game with Mount Union College, Heidelberg had played eight of its previous 10 games on the road, dating back to the 2008 season. Next up is a Halloween road contest at Wilmington College before closing out the year in Tiffin versus Marietta College and Muskingum University.

Quick Stat of the Afternoon: The Heidelberg offense has been receiving a new form of efficiency as of late. In its first four games, Heidelberg had a handful of 100-yard receivers, but failed to produce on the ground. The tide has turned as Kenny Sims and Jemar Lewis have had back-to-back 100-yard rushing games. Sims exploded for 144 rushing yards against no. 18 Ohio Northern University Oct. 10 and Jemar Lewis followed with 114 yards against Mount Union College Oct. 17. Lewis’ 100-yard outing marked just the second time that the nationally ranked Purple Raiders allowed a 100-yard rusher in its last 21 outings and was the first Ohio Athletic Conference opponent to register one since 2005.

Saturday’s Opponent: Heidelberg and Baldwin-Wallace will meet for the 63rd time on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets lead the overall series 44-18, but the Berg has won the last two-meetings. In Mike Hallett’s first year (2007), B-W came to Tiffin ranked 17th in the nation and the Berg upended the nationally-ranked opponent 42-20 on homecoming weekend. A season ago in Berea, Heidelberg topped Baldwin-Wallace in overtime, 37-34. Prior to Heidelberg’s two wins, B-W had won the previous 17 meetings. Baldwin-Wallace has won its last two outings after opening the year with three-straight setbacks, while the Berg has dropped five-straight.

Showtime: Today’s game will be broadcast on tape delay on SportsTime Ohio. Heidelberg’s own Jeff Garvin ’04 will provide the play-by-play, as another Heidelberg graduate Chris Young ’04 will provide color commentary. The game can be seen at 7:00 p.m. Oct. 24 and again at 5:00 a.m. Oct. 28. Its Nov. 14 game with Muskingum University will also be aired. The game versus the Muskies will be shown at 1:00 a.m. on Nov. 15 and again at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 18.

Last Time Around: A season ago, Heidelberg trailed Baldwin-Wallace by three late in the game, when Jesse Hawkins connected on a 19-yard field goal with two seconds left. In OT Hawkins connected on a 37-yard field goal to take the lead. The Heidelberg defense then forced B-W to fumble on the one-yard line on fourth and goal to take home the win. Heidelberg’s Jemar Lewis finished with 151 yards in 28 carries, while Dawond Roddy had 144 yards in six receptions. Andrew Miller completed 10-of-20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns. B-W’s Kyrell Crook had 126 yards on the ground in 20 attempts, while quarterback Anthony Gardner went 23-for-34 through the air for 206 yards.

’Berg Insider: Heidelberg faced its third-straight nationally ranked opponent Oct. 17 with no. 1 Mount Union College. Heidelberg overcame some early miscues and had an impressive showing, despite the final scoreboard reading in favor of Mount Union, 44-14. Jemar Lewis was the second-straight Heidelberg running back to produce 100 yards out of the backfield, finishing with 114 in 26 attempts. Mike Preston had his fourth 100-yard receiving game on the year, hauling in seven passes for 116 yards. Junior signal caller Andrew Miller completed 15-of-35 passes for 200 yards.

Yellow Jackets Last Outing: Baldwin-Wallace is coming off a 27-14 victory over Muskingum University in Berea. The Yellow Jackets scored 27 points before the Muskies reached the scoreboard in the third quarter. Quarterback Anthony Gardner completed 17-of-29 passes for 167 yards with one interception. Tim Miker had a game-high 107 yard and two touchdowns in 24 attempts, while Devon Jennings was back from injury and finished with 105 yards off of 12 receptions. Ryan Kish led the defense with seen tackles.

“Miller” Time: Junior signal caller Andrew Miller has come on strong in his second season as the starter under center for Heidelberg. For the year, Miller has thrown for 1,339 yards (83-for-171), which is highlighted by four 200-yard outings. Miller is well ahead of his numbers after the conclusion of six contests a season ago. In the first six games last year he had 1,060 yards and only eclipsed the 200-yard mark one, the season opener versus Westminster when he had 322 yards.

“GREIVING” Offense: Over the course of the last four years, Heidelberg opponents have grieved on offense when it attempted to cross the line through current senior defensive tackle Matt Grieves. Grieves is a two-time All-OAC honoree, while ranking in the top-10 on the team in tackles and has been a mainstay on special teams in field goal blocking. His senior season has been no exception. Through six games, Grieves leads the defense with 50 tackles, including 39 solo stops. He has a team-best three sacks for 15 yards, along with nine tackles for a loss of 31. Six quarterback hurries are also on is resumes, while he has three pass break ups and a blocked kick.

Hall of Fame: Heidelberg will induct its 24th class into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 24th. Included in the list of 2009 inductees is All-American offensive lineman Christopher Dillon, a 1993 graduate, and Anthony “Tony” Munafo ’57 and Jesse Williams ’30. All three represented Heidelberg on the gridiron. Also on the list of inductees is basketball standouts Mark Chrislip ’76 and Bill Dufur ’90. John Abbott will be awarded the “H” Association Distinguished Service Award for his lifetime service to the athletic department.
