Top Story: The Heidelberg University football team will look to extend its two-game winning streak this weekend when it entertains Marietta College in a 1:00 p.m. contest at Mayer Field, on the campus of Heidelberg. Saturday’s game marks the first of two-straight at home for the Berg. Heidelberg will look to close out the year with two wins at home to stand at .500 for the season. Today’s contest marks the first game played on campus in 64 years. The game is being played on campus in conjunction with the inauguration of Heidelberg’s 14th president Dr. Robert H. Huntington. The 2009 season concludes Nov. 14 against Muskingum University with Parents’ Day at the Berg.

Quick Stat of the Afternoon: Saturday’s game with Marietta College, along with Heidelberg’s Nov. 14 contest with Muskingum University, will be played at Mayer Field, on the campus of Heidelberg. The games mark the first contests played on campus since the 1945 season and are the first at Mayer Field. When the football team played on campus they called Armstrong Field home. Armstrong Field was located where Heidelberg’s Krammes Service Center currently sits. In 1946 the Berg moved its home games to Columbian Stadium, known today as Frost-Kalnow Stadium, but still practiced at Armstrong Field until the construction of Krammes Service Center in 1971.

Revamped: In the summer of 2008, Heidelberg made some significant changes to Mayer Field. The changes were part of Phase 1 of a planned recreation and athletic complex. Phase I involved replacing natural turf with synthetic turf, installing new lighting to accommodate night events, and other aesthetic improvements. The renovated field is used for men’s and women’s soccer, junior varsity football games, football practice and intramural games for all students. The 400-meter track was restriped and a chain-link fence that surrounded the facility was replaced with a wrought-iron fence and stone columns. Additionally, a new scoreboard will be installed, along with security lighting. Another component of Phase 1 is the construction of a soccer game field at Hidden Valley, which currently serves as a practice facility for the men’s and women’s soccer teams. The scoreboard at Mayer Field was moved to Hidden Valley.
