Grieves Tabbed OAC Defensive Player of the Week
Sophomore defensive end Matt Grieves (Huron, Ohio / Huron) of the Heidelberg College football team has been tabbed the Ohio Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 10, 2007. It is Grieves first player of the week honor of his career.
Grieves played an instrumental role in Heidelberg’s 37-26 season-opening win over Oberlin College on Sept. 8. He led a defensive unit that forced the Yeomen into five turnovers. Grieves finished the game with a career-high three sacks, along with a career-best five tackles. In Heidelberg’s first appearance on defense, Grieves recovered a fumble that was forced by Fran Cavotta (Highland Heights, Ohio / North Olmstead) to give Heidelberg possession on Oberlin’s 35-yard line. The Berg went on to score to extend its lead to 14-0.
The win over Oberlin snapped a 36-game losing streak for Heidelberg that dated back to Oct. 4, 2003. The Berg, under the guidance of first-year head coach Mike Hallett, opens OAC play Sept. 15 at Frost-Kalnow Stadium against visiting John Carroll University. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
