No. 1 Mount Union Tops the Berg at Frost-Kalnow Stadium
No. 1 Mount Union College topped the Heidelberg College football team 62-3 in Ohio Athletic Conference action today at Frost-Kalnow Stadium in Tiffin, Ohio. The setback dropped Heidelberg to 1-3 overall on the year and 0-3 in league action, while Mount Union improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the OAC.
Mount Union jumped out to a 21-0 lead after one quarter, but Heidelberg’s defense continued to pressure the Purple Raiders, making a stand on fourth and two in the second quarter to help spark the Berg offense. On the ensuing possession, Heidelberg put together an 11-play, 79-yard drive that set up a 24-yard Jesse Hawkins (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) field goal to cut Heidelberg’s deficit to 21-3. Highlighting Heidelberg’s drive was two first down receptions by Dawond Roddy (Sidney, Ohio / Sidney) from Steve West (Huron, Ohio / Huron). West connected with Roddy for a 30 and a nine-yard gain. Moving Heidelberg into the red zone was a 36-yard catch by Lucas Bauer (Huron, Ohio / Huron) on the left side of the field. The field goal by Heidelberg marked the first time on the year that Mount Union’s starting defense was scored on.
The second quarter concluded with two more Mount Union scores, giving the visitors a 35-3 advantage at the intermission. Heidelberg failed to score in the second half, giving up 24 third quarter points and held Mount Union to just a field goal in the final quarter.
For the game, Heidelberg picked up 102 yards of total offense compared to 570 yards by Mount Union. Through the air, West completed 6-of-14 passing attempts for 10 yards with his main receiving threat being Roddy with five catches for 62 yards followed by 36 yards from Bauer and 13 yards from Mike Preston (Maple Heights, Ohio / Euclid) on a catch apiece. Heidelberg’s ground game was led by Jemar Lewis (Bedford Heights, Ohio / Bedford) and Aaron Jonhenry (Berea, Ohio / Berea) with a combined 56 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Heidelberg’s Charlie Peffley (Hicksville, Ohio / Hicksville) led all players with 14 tackles, including 11 solo stops, while Xavior Purnell (Springfield, Ohio / Springfield) picked up eight tackles.
For Mount Union, quarterback Greg Micheli threw for 196 yards (13-for-17) with Bryson Davis picking up five catches for 70 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, Nate Kmic led the way with 123 yards on 18 carries, scoring four touchdowns on the day.
Heidelberg continues it trek through the OAC with Baldwin-Wallace College Oct. 6. The game with the Yellow Jackets is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.
