Hawkins Kicks his Way to Football Gazette Weekly Honor

Freshman place kicker Jesse Hawkins (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) of the Heidelberg College football team has kicked his way to a variety of weekly honors following his outing against Muskingum College on Nov. 10. On Monday, Hawkins was tabbed the Ohio Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, marking his second time he has received the honor on the year, and as announced on Friday, he earned a spot on Don Hansen’s Football Gazette’s Division III National Player of the Week list for the week ending Nov. 11, 2007. Hawkins was a special teams honoree, joining punters Dominick Ancona of Hobart College and Clinton Moran of Williamette University.

In Heidelberg’s 52-21 win over visiting Muskingum, Hawkins continued to ink his name into the Heidelberg record book. His career-high 48-yard field goal topped his previous mark of 47-yards he booted through the uprights a week prior, which are the top-two made field goals in the history of the program. Hawkins added seven more points on PATs.

Hawkins has made a Heidelberg single-season record 14 field goals on the year, with six coming from beyond 30 yards. Overall he hit 14-of-17 field goals on the year and 27-of-29 PAT’s. For the year, Hawkins led Heidelberg in scoring with 69 points.

Heidelberg closed out the 2007 season with an overall record of 4-6 and a 3-6 mark against league foes. First-year head coach Mike Hallett led the Berg to its best season since 1999.
