Top Story: The Heidelberg College football travels south on Saturday to take on Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Marietta College in a 1:30 p.m. tilt at Don Drumm Stadium. The game on Saturday marks the first of two-straight on the road to close out the 2008 season for Heidelberg. The Berg will look to bounce back after falling to Wilmington College, 23-20, a week ago on Parents’ Day in Tiffin. Heidelberg opened up to a 20-10 lead at halftime, but were held scoreless in the second half en route to the setback. Jemar Lewis had his second-consecutive 100-yard rushing game after picking up 146 yards in 22 carries. Defensively Justin Dawson kept his double-digit tackle streak going, finishing with 11, while Jamaul Pearson filled in for linebacker Vaughn Klein and tallied a career-best 13 stops.
 
Quick Stat of the Afternoon: Saturday’s contest between Marietta and Heidelberg will be an opportunity for each team to return back to the win column after a setback a week ago. Both teams sport an overall record of 2-6 and each posted a win to open the season and again on Oct. 25. Heidelberg can look to both sidelines and see familar faces as Marietta’s head coach Jeff Filkovski was in Tiffin a season ago and served as the offensive coordinator, where he received OAC Co-Assistant Coach of the Year honors. Also on the Marietta sideline is assistant Drew Mohr. Mohr coached the defensive backs at the Berg in 2007. Filkovski was the former quarterbacks coach for Heidelberg sophomore Andrew Miller. Aside from a year ago Heidelberg head coach Mike Hallett and Filkovski spent time together at Thomas More College in Kentucky.
 
Saturday’s Opponent: Marietta enters Saturday’s game with Heidelberg carrying an overall record of 2-6 and a 1-6 mark against Ohio Athletic Conference opponents. The Pioneers have been outscored on the year 216-86 which calculates out to giving up an average of 27.0 points a game, while putting just over 10 on the board. Most recently Marietta was shutout, 55-0, to no. 18 Otterbein College. Marietta turned the ball over four times and finished with 256 yards of total offense.
 
Marietta Series Quick Outs: Heidelberg and Marietta will meet for the 46th time in the history of both programs on Saturday. Marietta posted a 3-0 win in the inaugural meeting in 1917. Heidelberg owns a 25-20 series advantage, but the Pioneers have been victorious in the last four meetings. A season ago Marietta posted a 31-23 comback in Tiffin. The Pioneers scored 24 points in its final four possessions to post the win. Heidelberg quarterback Steve West completed 25-of-38 passes for 357 yards, while Jemar Lewis collected 77 yards rushing and Dawond Roddy had six catches for 89 yards. Vaughn Klein led the Berg defense with nine stops.

Streaking: Junior linebacker Justin Dawson has been streaking as of late. Streaking through opponent’s offensive line is what Dawson has been doing best as of late. He has put together three-straight double-digit tackle games. Things began with a then career-best 13-tackle performance at Mount Union (10/18) and returned at Baldwin-Wallace (Oct. 25) with a career-high 15 stops and added 11 tackles against Wilmington.
 
Hot Rod: Exploding onto the scene in 2008 has been senior wide receiver Dawond Roddy. Roddy has picked up 653 yards in 38 catches in eight games, which are all tops on the club. He has surpassed his receiving total from a year ago, which marked a career-best season. On the year he has produced three 100-yard receiving games, which tops his combined two from his previous three years.
 
Kicking the Books: Not only has sophomore placekicker Jesse Hawkins hit the books since coming to Heidelberg in the fall of 2007 he has kicked his way into the football record book. In his inaugural campaign Hawkins connected on a single-season record 14 field goals, topping the old mark of 12 set by John Davis in 1996. In just one season Hawkins was already half way to the career record for made field goals. The mark is 28 held by Davis. He also booted the top-two longest field goals in the history of the program. Hawkins connected on a 47-yarder against Ohio Northern Nov. 3 only to better that mark a week later against Muskingum with a 48-yarder. In 2008 Hawkins has connected on 7-of-7 field goals to increase his career total to 21.
 
J-Lew: Junior tailback Jemar Lewis, aka J-Lew as referred to by his teammates, broke out of the backfield at Baldwin-Wallace Oct. 25 for a career-high 151 yards on a career-best 28 carries. He was dropped for just one negative yard on the day and also came out of the backfield for one reception for one yard. For his efforts Lewis was tabbed the OAC Offensive Player of the Week. It was Lewis’ first player of the week honor of his career and Heidelberg’s first on the year. Lewis returned the next week to pick up 149 yards against Wilmington. For his career, Lewis has four 100-yard outings.
 
Block Party: In its last two outings Heidelberg’s special teams has thrown a block party. At Baldwin-Wallace (Oct. 25) and against Wilmington (Nov. 1) Heidelberg blocked three field goals and two point after attempts. At B-W senior Horace Smith blocked a point after attempt and combined with junior Matt Grieves for a blocked field goal. Grieves picked up the third block on the day with a blocked field goal as time expired in the first half. Against the Quakers freshman Wayne Lanum leaped through the air and blocked a 32-yard field goal attempt, while Grieves tipped another point after.
