Top Story: The Heidelberg College football team closes out the first half of its 2008 schedule on Saturday when it entertains Ohio Athletic Conference foe Ohio Northern University in a 1:30 p.m. battle at Frost-Kalnow Stadium. The game will be aired on tape delay on SportsTime Ohio Saturday evening at 8:00 p.m. and again Sunday morning at 5:00 a.m. Saturday’s contest marks the fourth home game in five outings on the year for the Berg, but unfortunate for Heidelberg is that they close out the year on the road for four of its last five games. The Berg is coming off a 52-14 setback at the hands of Otterbein College under the lights in Tiffin. Next on the docket for Heidelberg is two-straight road trips begining in Alliance at No. 1 Mount Union College.
Quick Stat of the Afternoon: It is homecoming 2008 at the Berg this weekend, along with hall of fame weekend. Under the guidance of head coach Mike Hallett the Berg is 1-0 on homecoming weekend. A year ago on homecoming Heidelberg posted a 42-20 victory over No. 17 ranked Baldwin-Wallace College. Heidelberg fell behind 3-0 in the first quarter, but bounced back to outscore the Yellow Jackets 42-17 over the final three quarters and posted its first Ohio Athletic Conference victory since the 2003 season. The Berg is in the same situation on Saturday, although they are not facing a ranked opponent, Heidelberg is in search of its first league victory on the year, as is the Polar Bears.
Saturday’s Opponent: Heidelberg and Ohio Northern will meet on the gridiron for the 77th time on Saturday with the Polar Bears holding a 41-29-6 series advantage. The Polar Bears garnered a 35-10 victory over the Berg in last year’s contest at Dial-Roberson Stadium (11/03/08).
Ohio Northern Series Quick Outs: ONU has won the last 13 meetings between these two institutions. Heidelberg last beat ONU on Nov. 12 at home, 34-20. Although the Berg trails in the overall series, it holds a 17-14-2 lead in games played in Tiffin. While the Berg was rebuilding its program it dropped its last six-striaght games against the Polar Bears on its home field, but prior to that the Berg won six-consecutive at home. Last season then freshman placekicker Jesse Hawkins booted a record-setting 47-yard field goal. Hawkins would better that mark a week later with a 48-yarder against Muskingum.
