TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s golf team opened the fall portion of its 2011-12 season today by losing to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University at Indian Brook Golf Club in Fostoria, Ohio. The Polar Bears tallied 388 shots to the Student Princes’ 409 on the par-72 and 6,527-yard course.
The event turned into a dual match after originally being scheduled as a multi-school tournament.
Senior Brian Cline (Mentor), whose 80.76 stroke average in 2010-11 was 14th in the conference, carded a team-best 74 strokes. He was followed by senior Corey Pierson (Troy) with 80, local sophomore Troy Keller (Tiffin/Calvert) with 81, senior Zak Markley (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) with 82, and junior Kyle Youngblood (Berea).
The Heidelberg golfers return to the course on Sunday-Tuesday, Sept. 11-13 for the three-day John P. Spiess Memorial. Sunday and Monday’s rounds will be played at Shaker Heights Golf Course, while Tuesday’s round will be played at Ironwood Golf Course in Wauseon, Ohio.
