Heidelberg Men's Golf Team Finishes Eighth at John Carroll University Pat "Poppa" Flowers Invitational

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s golf team carded an eighth-place showing today at the John Carroll University Pat “Poppa” Flowers Invitational at Shaker Heights Country Club in Shaker Heights, Ohio. The Student Princes tallied 478 strokes in a 27-hole format on the par-71 and 6,701-yard course.

What was originally scheduled to be a two-day tournament—with the opening round of play scheduled for yesterday—turned into a one-day outing after rain in the Cleveland area stopped play after three holes on Sunday. Sunday’s 18-hole round was shortened to nine holes and was played today.

Otterbein College and John Carroll tied for first place with 447 strokes and were followed by Baldwin-Wallace College’s “A” group (450), Walsh University’s “A” group (452), the University of Mount Union (454), Notre Dame College (462) and Walsh University’s “B” group (464).

Senior Corey Pierson (Troy) tied for 19th place by firing rounds of 75-40 for a total of 115 strokes to lead the Student Princes. Senior Zak Markley (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) followed Pierson in a tie for 32nd place with scores of 78 and 40 for a total of 118 strokes. Rounding out the Berg’s starting five were senior Brian Cline (Mentor) in a tie for 37th (80-39, 119), local sophomore Troy Keller (Tiffin/Calvert) in 47th (82-44, 126) and sophomore Logan Weiland (Valley City/Buckeye), who made his first start of the season, in 51st (89-49, 138).

Both Markley and Pierson bested their 18-hole scores at Heidelberg’s season-opening dual match against Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University.

‘Berg will have a quick turn-around following today’s tournament when it competes tomorrow at the Jon P. Spiess Memorial at Ironwood Golf Course in Wauseon, Ohio.
