Tiffin, OH – The Heidelberg men’s golf team opened their fall season with a dual match against Ohio Northern University at Colonial Hills Golf Club in Harrod, Ohio. The course played as a par 71, measuring 7043 yards.
Under the direction of third year head coach Dan Hartsel, the Student Princes shot a combined 343, but it was not enough to top the Polar Bears who carded a team score of 305.
The Berg was led by freshman Jack Eifel (Bay Village) who carded an 80 (39-41), placing him in a tie for fifth with ONU’s Bruce Hamit.
“The freshmen were nervous at first but held their composure throughout the match,” said Hartsel.
Last year, Hartsel graduated six golfers, allowing a new freshmen class to take over.
“It was difficult to replace those golfers and that experience when four of them were two-time varsity letter winners,” Hartsel explained. “This is a good group of freshmen who I believe will go out to play, work and get better as the year rolls on,” he added.
Freshman Kevin Hiller (Port Clinton) turned in an 83 for the contest. Hiller shot a 46 on the front and rallied to card a 37 on the back nine.
Junior Troy Keller (Tiffin/Calvert) and freshman Mike Brothers (Belleville) recorded 90’s for the round as freshman Chase Hushour (Bloomville/Buckeye Central) rounded out the Heidelberg top five with a 92.
The Heidelberg men will return to action when they travel to Wauseon on September 11th to compete in the Jon Speiss Memorial Tournament.
