Third-year head coach Dan Hartsel and the youthful Heidelberg men’s golf team competed in a pair of tournaments this week as they prepare to host the OAC Fall Invitational this weekend.
On Monday, the team competed in the 13th Annual Poppa Flowers Invitational hosted by John Carroll University on September 10. The Berg finished 7 out of 9, carding a 336. Tournament host John Carroll finished atop the competition carding a team score of 297, followed by OAC foe Ohio Northern who shot a combined 304.
Senior Troy Keller (Tiffin/Calvert) carded the low round for Heidelberg shooting a 79 (41-38) for the round. As an individual, Keller finished tied for 24th out of a field of 66 golfers.
Freshmen Jack Eifel (Bay Village/Bay) had another strong outing, carding an 82 (43-39) leaving him in a four-way tie in 34th place.
Freshmen Michael Brothers (Belleville) and Kevin Hiller (Port Clinton) both carded sub 90 scores, shooting an 86 (43-44) and 89 (44-45), respectively.
Drew Desjardins rounded out the Heidelberg golfers with a round of 97 (50-47).
Tuesday, the Jon P. Spiess Memorial Invitational would be a better outing for the Berg, as they dropped two strokes as a team shooting 334, and finishing seventh. Trine University claimed top prize, carding a 306. The Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University finished second with a team score of 308.
Eifel and Hiller claimed the lowest scores for the Berg shooting a pair of 80s. Eifel followed the 38 he shot on the front with a 42 on the back, while Hiller stroked a stellar even-par 36 on the front and a 44 on the back.
Junior Jared Linden (Grafton/Midview) carded an 86 (44-42) in his first outing as a Student Prince.
Freshmen Chase Hushour (Bloomville/Buckeye Central) shot a 91 (44-47) while Brothers shot an 88 (41-47) for Heidelberg.
The Heidelberg men’s golf team will return to action on September 16, when they host the Ohio Athletic Conference Fall Invitational at Red Hawk Golf Course in Findlay, Ohio.
